About the HCG Diet
The HGG Diet, developed in the 1950’s as a quick method for weight loss, incorporates a 500-calorie daily diet with injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy. Rapid weight loss can be expected, up to 1-2 lbs per day, and the full diet cycle only takes about a month.
How Does the HCG Diet Work?
The theory driving this diet is that the HCG hormone will help release body fat from trouble areas – the hips, inner thighs, and buttocks – as it does during pregnancy so the pregnant mother can support her fetus. Studies have shown that a 500-calorie daily diet alone will cause significant weight loss. Diets consisting of less than 1000 calories per day are widely considered dangerous and require consultation with a nutritionist.
HCG is not approved for over-the-counter distribution, so it should be expectedly administered through prescribed injection. Drops, pills, and other products available without a doctor’s prescription are most likely fraudulent and are absolutely illegal.
Are there Side Effects?
Side effects may include headache, fatigue, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, hair loss, gallstones, blood clots, blocked arteries, and electrolyte imbalance. The FDA has seen at least one case of pulmonary embolism as a result of the HCG Diet. In order to approach this diet both safely and effective, your primary physician and a nutritionist should be consulted throughout the process.
Is the HCG Diet Right For Me?
Most patients can expect to see weight loss as significant as 1-2 lbs per day. Though diet and exercise are recommended for most, this diet is not for everyone. It is highly recommended that those interested in this diet consult with their primary physician.
