Nobody wants a double chin, yet some of us have one, no matter how healthy our lifestyle. They make us look much heavier and older, and often cause us to be camera shy. We’re now in luck: The FDA has approved the first drug that can eliminate stubborn neck fat without surgery. It’s called Kybella and is a deoxycholic acid that is made by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals in California. Deoxycholic acid is the same acid that your body makes to help it absorb fat. Better yet, it only takes minutes for a medical professional to inject it into the affected fat tissue.
Kybella instantly works on your double chin and destroys the cell membrane of submental fat, triggering it to burst and permanently go away. This is truly a problem area for many and this is great news. About 68 percent of those surveyed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery in 2014 said that extra fat under the neck and chin were one of their main concerns. A lot of people think that having a double chin adds years to their face.
A number of injections are required during a treatment, but it only takes a few days to heal and no bandages are needed. It may take a few sessions to get rid of all of your problem areas. Kybella received FDA approval after the manufacturer submitted 19 clinical studies that included nearly 2,600 patients. It was shown that the drug worked to get rid of moderate-to-severe chin fat.
The FDA warns that while this might be a successful treatment for your neck, do not expect it to dissolve fat in other problem areas.
“It is important to remember that Kybella is only approved for the treatment of fat occurring below the chin, and it is not known if Kybella is safe or effective for treatment outside of this area,” said Dr. Amy G. Egan, deputy director of the Office of Drug Evaluation III in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
