You have likely heard of Kybella or seen advertisements on billboards. It is a product that is manufactured by Allergan. Kybella is FDA-approved, patented, and a synthetic type of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps metabolize fat. Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment made for contouring and enhancing the appearance of submental fat (double chin). Kybella dissolves submental fat and leaves the jawline looking more youthful and smooth. There isn’t any downtime required that traditional treatments, such as liposuction or neck surgery would have.
A double chin can happen to anyone, even if they are otherwise thin or have success losing weight in other areas of the body. The appearance of excess fat under the chin can cause a person to look heavier and older than they actually are. Kybella can provide a more defined jawline and restore greater facial symmetry, while taking years off a person’s facial appearance.
Prior to a Kybella injection, a grid is placed over the area and there are markings to show precisely where the injections will be. A numbing cream will be applied, too. Kybella treatment consists of a series of injections and takes about 20 minutes per session. Once Kybella is injected, it disrupts the fat cell membrane and causes lysis, which means it destroys the cell membrane. The fat cell then releases its fatty contents and the body goes on to metabolize the fat.
For the most outstanding results, usually two to four sessions about a month apart are needed. The first session requires use of the most (two to four) syringes. Some of the fat will already be diminished when further sessions take place, which is why less will be necessary.
