If you’re at all into facial aesthetics, you’ve likely heard of Kybella. This product is manufactured by Allergan, the makers of Botox. Kybella is a FDA-approved, patented, synthetic type of deoxycholic acid — a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in metabolizing fat. Kybella is actually the first and only non-surgical treatment that is FDA-approved for improving the and contouring the appearance of submental fat (what many call a ‘ double chin’). Kybella works by dissolving submental fat and leaving a smooth jawline. Better yet, the treatment does not require the downtime that traditional treatments, such as neck surgery or liposuction would.
Unfortunately, a double chin can affect many, even if a person is otherwise thin or has success losing weight in other areas of the body. The appearance of excess fat under the chin makes a person seem more aged and heavier than they really are. Kybella can give a person a more defined facial jawline, as well as restore greater facial symmetry. It can take years off an individual’s appearance.
Before a Kybella injection, a grid is placed over the area and there are markings made to show precisely where the injections will occur; a numbing cream is also applied. Kybella treatment consists of a series of injections and takes about 20 minutes overall for a session. Kybella can be considered a lunchtime procedure due to the little amount of time it takes for a session. Once Kybella is injected, it disrupts the fat cell membrane and causes lysis, which means that it destroys the cell membrane. Afterwards, the fact cell lets go of its fatty contents and the body metabolizes the fat.
Usually, two to four sessions, about one month apart are needed for the greatest outcome, with the first session requiring the most (about two to four) syringes. Some of the fat will already be diminishing when remaining sessions take place, so less is required.
