Juvederm Ultra XC (Allergan) has been approved by the FDA for injection into the lips and perioral area for lip augmentation in individuals over 21 years old, the company has announced. This makes it one of the more current indications for the filler.
Juvederm Ultra XC consists of a modified form of hyaluronic acid (HA) and a small amount of lidocaine to help improve the injection comfort. The formulation of Juvederm Ultra XC is a smooth gel. This gel “instantly adds fullness to the lips and is the only dermal filler that has proven results lasting up to one year for lip augmentation,” Allergan said a news release.
There were clinical trials for the gel for the purpose of lip augmentation— 79 percent of the participants showed a “meaningful improvement” in fullness of lips three months after treatment and over 78 percent said that they were more satisfied overall with the look and feel of their lips one year after treatment, according to Allergan.
The FDA has already approved Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC injectable gels for injection into areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles usually occur to add temporary volume to the skin, particularly the nose and mouth area.
Juvederm Voluma XC injectable gel is used for deep injection for cheek augmentation to correct volume deficits that are related to age in the midface of people who are over 21 years old. “These products should not be used in patients who have severe allergies, marked by a history of anaphylaxis or history or presence of multiple severe allergies, and should not be used in patients with a history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins or lidocaine,” the company said.
